The Irish government needs to introduce measures to tackle the lack of truck drivers.
A great interview in the Clare Champion today with young truck driver Sophie Howard, from TPN Depot 130, Eoin Gavin Transport, explaining the challenges facing the freight industry in Ireland. As the age profile of truck drivers grows older, there seems to be no urgency to tackle the problem. With few younger drivers being enticed into the industry, the freight transport sector is facing a demographic trap of sorts.
More driving testers should be hired to meet the demand for driving tests. Waiting lists are currently at least 5 months long for cars around the country, and only slightly less for trucks. More apprenticeships, and courses should be made available for potential young truck drivers wishing who need to get valuable experience in the industry.
As the covid pandemic should have taught us – a well functioning supply chain is critical for the country. We need to encourage young truck drivers to enter the industry.
