Langan Couriers is another founding member of the network. It was established by Michael Langan in 1981 and, with two vans, he provided a parcel and package courier business in Galway. John McGann joined the company 1988 and together they developed the business, offering nationwide haulage. They managed all of the transport services of Digital, the hi-tech company with a manufacturing facility in Galway. At the same time, they were developing their
courier service and were amongst the first transport companies in the country to get ISO:9001 accreditation. The company grew in the 199os, providing transport
and warehousing, and attracting major clients including Nortel, Hewlett Packard, Medtronic and Boston Scientific.
Prior to the creation of The Pallet Network, Langan was moving pallets to and trom Galway for Independent Express. “When we were asked to be a founding member, we thought it would be a good idea. We were running trucks all over Ireland, here, there and everywhere, and we thought a pallet network would allow us to offer a better service, while at the same time save empty running and cut costs.” In 2007, they became Fleetwood Paints main carrier and use the network for overnight delivery of the paint to retail stores and decorating centres around Ireland.
Both Mike and John have extensive interests outside the transport industry. Mike was a water polo player of some note while John is the treasurer of GAA Galway Hurling Board. John restores antique tractors. He bought a 1957 Ferguson 35 Golden Belly, which he found in a hedgerow and restored it to Class A condition. He has won three first prizes and a second prize for his tractors in British shows, and has featured in international magazines.
