111 – Raheen, Limerick
Mike Hogan has worked in transport most of his life and enjoys the challenge. He got his truck licence at just seventeen years old and worked for Hickey Group, initially as a driver and then as transport manager. After seven or so years with the company, he bought his own van and, in 1984, established Mike Hogan Transport. He transported groceries for cash and carry outlets in Limerick city and county.
Mike played rugby for St Mary’s Club and captained the team. One of his team mates was a foreman at Golden Vale and asked him to help out after another driver had let them down. From then, he continued to work for Golden Vale, starting with one van and delivering locally. Golden Vale grew and Mike started moving artic loads going to Dublin and Waterford for them. He extended the business, built a 13,000-square foot warehouse and changed the name of the company to Abhann Logistics.
In the early days of TPN, Abhann Logistics was called on to help solve some problems in Kerry and in Clare. Mike knew Peter Mills, then the TPN operations manager. In 2008, when a network vacancy arose in Limerick, Abhann became the member for that area. More than 30% of Abhann’s business goes through the network. He continues to transport dairy products and does a lot of full and part loads for the pharmaceutical industry.
Abhann is a family-run business, with Gertrude Hogan doing the accounts and daughters, Edel and Niamh, working for the company. Mike’s connection with Limerick rugby continues and he was president of the Limerick Leprechauns, a team of golden oldies who play matches for charity. Over their 30-year history, they have raised over €1 million for distribution to different causes
